Overland trips

Please refer to our Day tours information on sights around Judy's base in Somerset West - this area could be your starting point or final destination

As always, Judy will develop an itinerary that reflects your personal interests. You may find it best to enjoy a round-trip, or go from A to B and arrange your onward travel from a different departure point. Judy can discuss these decisions with you.

With different routes and durations, popular destinations for overland trips include:

Arniston

The Cape Overberg

The Cape Overberg boasts endless stretches of white sandy beaches and is part of the World Heritage Site Cape Floral Kingdom. Rich in indigenous flora - specifically fynbos - this region is popular for those who enjoy nature at its best.

The Elgin area of the Overberg is also well known for its wine and roses, boasting some of the best gardens and a wonderful rose nursery, while Sauvignon Blanc and other cool climate wines are being produced here with great success. Elgin is also famous for apples, pears, plums and nectarines.

Southern Right whales can usually be seen along the coastal route towards Hermanus from August to November.

For a lesson in the area's history, you might visit the quaint towns of Elim, Genadendal and Stanford.

The tip of Africa

Cape Agulhas - the place where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet - is the southernmost tip of Africa. Agulhas National Park is home to endangered examples of lowland fynbos, largely restricted to the southern Overberg.

Nature reserves, museums and quaint villages offer additional attractions for visitors.

Garden Route

The Garden Route is named after the ecologically diverse vegetation and numerous lagoons and lakes along the coast and includes towns such as Mossel Bay, Knysna, Oudtshoorn, Plettenberg Bay and George.

Knysna, one of the Garden Route's best known destinations, was named as one of the Top 100 Destinations in the World in the tripadvisor® 2008 Travellers' Choice Destinations Awards (you can look up information about Judy on this website, too).

Klein Karoo

In the heart of the Klein Karoo, Oudtshoorn offers the country's oldest tourist attraction, the Cango Caves. These underground limestone caverns offer fascinating formations in different colours, sculpted by nature over millions of years.

This area is also well known for its ostriches.

Between the stunning Swartberg and Outeniqua mountains runs the 'longest wine route' in the country, the R62. Starting near Robertson, the road leads past the picturesque towns of Montague, Barrydale, Ladismith and Calitzdorp to Oudsthoorn. From here, you can travel the majestic Swartberg Pass over to charming Prince Albert in the Great Karoo.

Eastern Cape

Heading across the Overberg, you will reach the Eastern Cape. After taking in the best sights of the Western Cape, you have a choice of nine tour routes in the Eastern Cape, offering lush wilderness, semi-arid plains and unspoilt beaches, all steeped in the rich history of the area.

Popular towns in the Eastern Cape include Port Elizabeth, Grahamstown, Graaff-Reinet and Port Alfred.

The Eastern Cape offers malaria-free Big 7 game-viewing at sites such as the Addo Elephant National Park near Port Elizabeth and the Mountain Zebra National Park near Cradock. Addo is home to over 450 elephants, lions, Cape buffalo, black rhino, a variety of antelope species, as well as the unique flightless dung beetle, found almost exclusively in Addo. Animals in the Mountain Zebra National Park include the cheetah, Cape buffalo, black rhino, eland, black wildebeest, red hartebeest and gemsbok.

The Eastern Cape also offers wonderful facilities for beach holidays - the warm Indian Ocean and uncrowded seaside villages assure a successful stay. Inland from Grahamstown or East London, you can also enjoy the quaint village of Hogsback with its English gardens and spectacular mountain scenery.

"Judy has taken my mother and her friend on several short holiday tours in the Western Cape in the past two years. She arranged the itinerary and accommodation and the ladies had a very successful and pleasant time on tour with Judy. I knew that my mother was in good hands as Judy is a very caring and reliable person. That Judy speaks fluent German is a great advantage."
